Tea with AK71: Durians tidak boleh?

Friday, September 2, 2011

This photo was taken at a MRT station on the Circle Line. See why people say Singapore is a "fine" country?

No durians but no fine if we were caught har?
Are the authorities partial to durians?

Does anyone know the reason why there is no fine for being caught with durians on MRT trains?

Could it be that the powers that be have not decided on how much the fine should be? If so, I have a suggestion!

To be fair, they should have a weighing scale at every station and the quantum of each fine should be determined by the weight of the offending fruit which was brought onboard!

Bring more, fine more. Bring less, fine less.

If the reason for banning durians on MRT trains is because of its endearing fragrance, what about durian mooncakes, durian puffs, durian puddings and other such yummy delights?

Heavens forfend! ;)

First I must declare I am a durian lover.

But I hate the smell of blue cheese and smelly toufu.

For non-durian lovers, the smell of durian can be too "tok kong"...

Come to think of it, MRT can also put a sign to encourage passengers to use deodorant. No? Same principle mah!

Where's my maggi-mee pot? OK, you all can start throwing stones at me now.

Hi SMOL,

I agree! Why bother banning durians when trains really smell bad during peak hours with a plethora of odours!? ;p

Actually the no food in station is a big joke because staff also eat inside the station control... Saw at jurong east station..

Think they just confiscate the Durian and staff bring home makan... So no fine

Hi Kappo,

Thank you for that field report! You should have taken a video of what you saw and sent it to STOMP! ;p

Rules are one thing, enforcement is another.

I see overseas subways pple eating e.g. New York City but their trains are not as dirty as what we think. What is needed is civil consciousness which is at times in short supply in SG.

Hi Panzer,

Thanks for the field report from NYC! :D

OK, we need to run a year long Courtesy Campaign! ;)

I remember seeing people queuing for MRT and letting people out first way back.

Maybe we should start fine those not queuing too.

Hi Hwang,

This is something I feel strongly about too! Good idea!

Hi Ak71,

Apart from the unpleasant smell, perhaps durians are banned for their disturbing looks. Those unfriendly spikes certainly do not work magic in the eye of those Westerners who never see durians before.

Hi INVS 2.0,

Wah! Banned because of looks? What about rambutan, soursop, jackfruit etc. Ha ha.. You could be right, of course. :)

Actually, these days, most durian sellers would remove the shells and put the fruit in styrofoam boxes and shrink wrap.

Perhaps, the authorities should have a drawing of a styrofoam box instead. Ha ha.. ;)

Then lunch boxes are not allowed on trains too... you will get fined for tapao-ing.

Hi Hwang,

Hahaha.. I think I would be quite distracted by the aroma of cooked food too, especially if I were hungry. BAN! ;p
